Maître Pierre Noual, avocat en droit du patrimoine culturel, revient pour The New York Times sur les récents vols d'oeuvres dans les musées européens.

A spate of robberies, many in small towns, has raised questions about how to secure the country’s treasures.

« Pierre Noual, a French lawyer who specializes in recovering art, said robberies like this were often ordered by “sponsors, probably foreign, who want to have great works, such great masters, in their private collections.” [...] The vulnerability of museums, Noual said, has also been laid bare by a series of episodes in which vandals, some of them political activists, have defaced artworks by spraying or slashing them. France’s weak legal response to these crimes, he said, has emboldened would-be thieves ».
